SILLY SNAKE

24 cm (9.5 in)
diameter

8 ply yarn,
3.00 mm crochet hook

WARNING.
This pattern uses the British standard of crochet terms.
If you would prefer the USA version you may use this link.

I have deliberately not mentioned colours in these patterns. Toys can be made with any colour combination – the brighter the toy, the more the kids like them.

Materials
50 grams of colour A
40 grams of colour B
3.5 mm crochet hook

Under Body

[1 dc, 1 tr] 6 times, 1 ch, turn**

Rep from * to ** another 23 times (do not break off yarn). To save yourself much frustration I would suggest that you place a coloured marker at the beginning of each repeat.
At this stage you should have something similar to 2 donuts sitting on top of each other.

To make up
Starting at the tail end, place the upper and lower sections of the snake together and pin in place. If put markers at the beginning of each set of pattern rows this will help you match up the outer sides more easily. Using small oversew stitches join the two pieces together, leaving approx 15 cm (6") gap at the centre of the small curved edge. Turn the snake the right side out and stuff firmly making sure to shape the head nicely. Ladderstitch the opening closed and pushing in some more stuffing as you go.
With brightly coloured contrasting yarns embroider some flowers (lazy daisy stitch) in a random pattern along the snake's back.

Tongue - make 2 pieces
Using red yarn, make 12 ch, turn
Sl-st to end.
Put the 2 tongue pieces side by side and join together a little more than half way, to leave the "fork" of the tongue split. Slip stitch the tongue securely to the front of the head at the seam line.

Eyes - make 2
Using white, ch 3
Work 8 tr into 1st ch, join in black yarn and work 5 tr into same chain, sl-st to 3rd ch.
Fasten off.
Position eyes evenly on head, measuring 4 cm up from front head seam and 3 cm between the eyes. Slip stitch to head. Work a couple of sts of blue yarn around the edge of the black, and some white sts radiating out from top of eyes for eyelashes.

Top notch
Cut 12 lengths of a contrast coloured yarn approx 13 cm (5") long. Individually hook the lengths of yarn (as you would a fringe) into the top of the head, keeping them as close together as possible. Take a longer piece of the same yarn and bind the bottom of the bunch together, secure in a tight knot and run ends back into the snake's head.
