O-GOLLY

30 cm – 12 inches

8 ply yarn (DK, worsted weight )

3.00, 3.25 & 3.75 mm needles

WARNING - Advanced level project.

The hair for O-Golly is worked in
loop stitch and there are
instructions here
on how to work this stitch.

Eyes and mouth are crochet with 3 ply yarn, but felt shapes could be substituted.

I have deliberately not mentioned colours in these patterns. Toys can be made with any colour combination - the brighter the toy; the more the kids like them.

However you will require
50 gms of yarn for Golly's jacket
50 gms of black yarn.
3.00 mm, 3.25 & 3.75 mm knitting needles.

Special Abbreviations
M - place a marker
B & T - break off yarn and thread through stitches on needle, pull tight and fasten.

Legs/Pants -
Cast on 30 sts with colour A and working g-st stripes of 2 rows colour A, 2 rows colour B.
Work 16 stripes (33 rows)
Next row: Cast off 18, k12.
Next row: k12, cast on 18.
Work 16 stripes (total 68 rows)
Cast off.
Place markers 12 sts from waist at cast on/off edges.

Feet - 3.25 needles
Using black,
Pick up 17 sts along bottom of leg (1 st per stripe).
St-st 2 rows.
Next row: k2tog to end (9)
Next row: Purl.
Next row: k2tog to end (5).
B & T.

Body & Head - 3.25 needles
Using shirt colour,
Pick up 34 stitches at top of pants (1 st per stripe).
Work 24 rows st-st following details below.
Row 21: k8, M, k18, M, k8 (shoulders).
Row 25: (k2tog) to end. (17)
Next row: Change to black, purl.
Next row: Inc in every st to end (34)
Work 21 rows st-st, and at the same time place a coloured markers in the centre of rows 5 (for mouth) and 11 row - 4 sts either side of centre (for eyes ).
Next row: (k3, k2tog) 6 times, k4.(28)
Next and alt rows: Purl
Next row: (k2, k2tog) to end (21)
Next row: (k1, k2tog) to end (14)
B & T tightly.

With right sides facing, Join row ends of feet.
Join cast on/off edges from waist of pants to crotch markers.
Join cast on/off edges of legs.
Join row ends at back of head, leaving open section of back.
Turn right side out and stuff head, legs, and finally body firmly.
Oversew back of body closed.

Arms - 3.25 mm needles
Cast on 16 sts in shirt colour.
St-st 10 rows.
Change to black
St-st 5 rows.
Next row: (p2tog) to end (8)
B & T tightly.

Join row ends, turn right side out.
Stuff arms and align top of arm with marker on side of body, oversew in place.

Hair - 3.75 needles
The hair is worked in loop stitch.
Using black, cast on 12 sts.
1st row: Loop st to last 3 sts, turn.
2nd row: K to last st.
3rd row: Loop st to last 2 sts, turn.
4th row: K to end.
5th row: Loop st.
6th rows: K.
Repeat these 6 pattern rows 11 more times. Cast off.

Oversew cast on and cast off edges together. Note that the longer set of row ends is the face edge of hair. Gather up the opposite set of row ends tightly and fasten off. Turn right side out. Position on head as a cap and stitch to head.

Eyes crochet - make 2
If you find difficulty with crochet, I suggest that you cut small circles of felt for the eyes and sew securely to face.
USA - substitute dc with sc
To crochet eyes use 3 ply (baby) yarn and 2.00 mm hook.
Using black ch 3, 7 dc into first ch, 1 ch turn.
Next round: 2 dc in each previous dc (14).
Sl st to turning ch, fasten off.

Mouth
With red 3 ply and 2.00 mm hook
Ch 5, work 3 dc into 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc into each of next 3 ch, 3 dc in last ch, turn and work 1 dc into the base of the ch sts, sl st to 1st dc. Fasten off.

Slip stitch eyes and mouth to face where colour markers indicate.


Jacket - 3.00 mm needles
Jacket is worked in g-st.
Cast on 16 sts, beginning at right front edge.
1st row: knit
2nd row: inc in 1st stitch, knit to end. (17)
Rep these two rows until 30 rows (31)
Shape armhole
Next row: k4, cast off 10 sts purlwise, k17. (31)
Next row: inc in 1st stitch, k16, cast on 10, k4. (32)
Next row: knit
Next row: inc in 1st stitch, k to end (33)
Rep last 2 rows until 42 sts.
Knit 3 rows.
Next row: cast off 18, k24.
Next row: k24, cast on 18. These last two rows are the split of the jacket "tails".
Knit 3 rows (you should be at the neck edge)
Next row: k to last 2 sts, k2tog
Next row: knit
Rep last 2 rows until 31 sts (neck edge)
Shape armhole

Next row: k4, cast off 10 purlwise, k to last 2 sts, k2tog (30)
Next row: k16, cast on 10sts, k4
Next row: k to last 2 sts, k2tog
Next row: knit
Rep last 2 rows until 16 sts.
Cast off.

Sleeves - 3.00 needles (make 2)
Cast on 12 sts with jacket colour.
G-st 36 rows.
Cast off.

Join cast off and cast on edges of sleeve together. Fit sleeve into armhole opening of jacket and stitch in place. Repeat with next sleever. Fit jacket on doll and roll back top corners of the jacket to form lapels. Use a few stitches to hold in place. Lap fronts over and using white yarn stitch through both fronts to make "buttons".
